What is Cryosurgery
This is a type of surgical procedure that makes use of cold to destroy abnormal tissue, for example, tumors. It often involves the use of compounds such as liquid nitrogen and at the same time, carbon dioxide and argon can also be used during cryosurgery. When the temperature of liquid nitrogen is between -346 and -320 ° F, it immediately freezes almost everything that comes in contact with it. In the case of human tissue, it can kill and destroy cells that come in contact with it. This is very important when the cells you wish to kill are cancer cells.
How does cryotherapy work?
Cryosurgeons make use of 3 mm diameter or smaller diameter cryoprobes supercooled with argon. The death of cancer cells is secured at forty degrees which are lower than zero Celsius, even for a moment. If the center reaches this temperature, the outer core of the ice ball may be considerably warmer and barely less than zero. This limit exceeds the “double freezing”. This holds benefit of the fact that cells are swollen during thawing. Once frozen, they are defrosted by reversing the temperature of the probe. This includes putting the argon on and placing the helium under the opposite effect. As soon as the ice ball freezes, the argon is reactivated and the procedure repeated.
Where Cryosurgery Equipment is Used
The equipment is used mainly in the destruction of problematic tissues in the body. In most cancer cases, this is not the first line of defense. However, this can be used when other forms of treatment have failed, especially if cancer seems to be returning after another treatment.
This procedure is most often performed in the treatment of cancer or pre-cancerous skin lesions. However, it is used in some internal organs such as the liver when the disease and other problems make conventional operations to be difficult or risky.
It has been shown that cryosurgery is used as a primary treatment for early prostate cancer which occurs in the prostate. It is also performed when cancer reoccurs after other treatments.
How Cryosurgery is Performed
The doctor will put liquid nitrogen on the skin with a cotton swab or spray. A drug can be used to prevent pain or discomfort.
In case you are treating an internal area, the surgeon will make use of a scope, which is a flexible tube that can fit into different openings of your body, such as urethra, rectum or surgical incision. Liquid nitrogen is introduced into the area to be treated and applied to the target cells.
The cells freeze, die, and they will be absorbed by your body.
Imaging equipment will be used by your doctor, for example, an ultrasound. This is used as a guide to performing the procedure.
