What is a Otoscope/Ophthalmoscope?

Otoscopes are used for the examination of the ear. This medical equipment is used by doctors to examine the eardrum. Other types of otoscopes in addition to their benefit put a small amount of air into the eardrum in order to monitor vibrations in the eardrum.

Otoscopes have also been found to detect some ear defections such as Ear infections, eardrum damage, and ear wax accumulation. The ophthalmoscope, on the other hand, is an instrument that allows the doctor to look at the back of the eye which is referred to as the fundus. The fundus is made is made up of the retina, an optical disc, and a blood vessel. This test is included in a routine eye examination in case of eye disease.

Ophthalmoscopy, also known as fundus, is a test that allows professional healthcare in the back of the eye and other objects using the ophthalmoscope (or funduscopy). This is done as part of the eye examination and can be done as part of a routine check. This is fundamental for determining the health of various part of the eye such as the retina, optical disc, and vitreous humor.

How a Otoscope/Ophthalmoscope Works?

In the eardrum, a speculum is inserted and adjusted so that the doctor can clearly see the eardrum. The two ears are examined generally even if one of the ears is affected.

A normal appearance of the ear canal is usually skin colored and has tiny hair. Yellowish brown earwax is a normal observation. The eardrum is a thin, shiny, and pearl to the grey membrane. The tiny middle ear which pushes the eardrum can be seen. In the case of a normal ear, the otoscope light will be reflected. In the case of ear infections, the color of the eardrum changes and becomes red and swollen. In case there is any rupture in the ear, drainage of fluid will appear in the middle ear. In addition, scarring, retraction and or bulging also become visible.

Where Should a Otoscope/Ophthalmoscope be Used?

As mentioned above, an otoscope is a medical device used for viewing in the ears. It is used by healthcare providers in order to detect diseases during regular examinations and studying ear symptoms. An otoscope potentially gives a view of the ear canal and tympanic membrane or eardrum.

Since the eardrum is the boundary between the external ear canal and the middle ear, its characteristics may indicate various middle ear disorders. The presence of cerumen (ear wax), shed skin, pus, canal skin edema, foreign body, and various ear diseases can make any view of the eardrum invisible and thus severely compromise the value of otoscopy done with a common otoscope.

What is Ophthalmoscopy

Ophthalmoscopy is performed as part of a complete physical or eye examination.

An ophthalmoscope is used in order to detect and assess the symptoms of various vascular retinal diseases or ocular diseases for example glaucoma.

For patients who have headaches, the discovery of swollen optic discs or papilledema, on ophthalmoscopy is a key sign, as indicating increased intracranial pressure can be a result of hydrocephalus, benign intracranial hypertension (aka pseudotumor cerebri) or brain tumor, amongst other conditions. Cupped optic discs are seen in glaucoma.

In diabetes mellitus patients, regular ophthalmoscopic eye examinations done once every 6 months to 1 year are essential in order to screen for diabetic retinopathy as visual loss due to diabetes can be prevented by retinal laser treatment if retinopathy is detected at an early stage.

In arterial hypertension, hypertensive changes of the retina closely mimic those in the brain and may predict cerebrovascular accidents (strokes).
