How Surgical CO2 Lasers Work?
Using the wavelength 10.6 μm, the CO2 laser is absorbed well by water in the tissue. Therefore, the CO2 laser has the benefit for more precise cutting and ablation comparing it to all other laser devices and alternative laser wavelengths. The CO2 laser has the smallest zone of thermal spread ≈ 0.1mm (depending on tissue’s water content and laser parameters) so it provides unprecedented precision and ability to safely operate near critical structures and delicate anatomy.
CO2Â Laser can also provide microvascular hemostasis with adequate intraoperative visualization (vessels ~ 0.5 mm) and helps seal nerve endings and lymphatics all in one action.
CO2Â laser surgery has been associated with char free, clean margins, less bleeding, shorter surgery time, less preoperational complications and reduced post-op edema which potentially can lead to faster healing time and less pain.
